The certificate is designed to prepare graduate students for higher-education teaching. Through the coursework, participation in the Graduate Teaching Academy, and through teaching or practicum experiences, students will learn and apply the pedagogical and institutional knowledge necessary for successful teaching and student learning. Each component of the certificate is designed with one of these goals in mind by offering direct instruction, group discussion, direct observation, and mentor relationships.

EDAH 5910 Practicum is waived for students with prior college-level teaching experience. The Practicum hours must be replaced with a third course from the approved list.

A graduate certificate is not a graduate degree. A graduate degree represents a program of independent inquiry beyond the depth of coursework alone, while a graduate certificate represents a set of courses only.

  • All courses must be taken at OU. No transfer credit will apply.
  • No course substitutions are permitted for graduate certificates.
  • Coursework applied to a graduate certificate cannot be more than five years old as of the semester the graduate certificate is awarded.
  • Students must earn a grade point average of 3.00 or higher on all coursework applied to the graduate certificate.
